Description

Published by Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), Hulda Guzmán: Miracle Fruits is a fundamental introduction to the vibrant universe of the Dominican artist, whose paintings represent fantastic and luxurious tropical scenarios inhabited by diverse human characters, animals, and vegetation—both real and imaginary. The first monographic book dedicated to Guzmán’s work, it features three new essays that explore the artist’s singular blending of references to the history of painting and architecture, including dialogues with minimalism in ancient Chinese painting, Japanese ukiyo-e, impressionism and post-impressionism, surrealism and magical realism, Mexican Muralism, and ex-voto painting.

This richly illustrated edition presents 84 pieces by the artist, including eight realized in 2025 for the MASP exhibition. The volume organizes Guzmán’s work in sections that highlight landscape painting of both day and night; her relation to architecture; her inner demons; and studio scenes with self-portraits and everyday characters. It is an invitation to become immersed in Guzmán’s artistic production, and in the critical discussions surrounding the Caribbean’s tropical landscape and ecology at large.

Hulda Guzmán (b. 1984, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) received a BA from Altos de Chavón School of Design in the Dominican Republic and went on to study photography and mural painting at the National School of Visual Arts, Mexico.
